SAN MARCOS — Traffic slowdowns are coming to San Elijo Road in San Marcos as Double Peak School enters the final phases of construction this summer. The K-8 campus will open Aug. 29, and will serve students from the San Elijo Hills area. Traffic improvements needed to add turning lanes into the school will close down one lane in each direction for a portion of San Elijo Road for several months, officials said.“We’re removing the median in order to create two left-hand lanes into the school and add signals and lights,” said Tova Corman, executive director of facilities planning and development for San Marcos Unified School District. The closures started Monday, and on Wednesday night the road will be reduced to a single lane between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Meanwhile, construction of the school will proceed in phases, with the first building slated for completion June 1 and subsequent structures opening every few weeks over the summer.“The site is doing really well,” Corman said. “The first building will be classrooms and administration.”As crews move in furniture, construction will continue on four other structures: a second classroom building, kitchen, gym and performing arts center.

When completed, the school will have 51 classrooms and accommodate up to 1,200 students, Corman said. It will open in August with 950 students in grades K-7.With a focus on music, arts and innovation, Double Peak will offer an instrumental music program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, said Principal Steve Baum. It will also have a “maker space” for design and construction, and instruction in engineering, coding and technology. Administrators, teachers and nutrition staff had a hand in helping plan the school, Corman said, ensuring that the buildings’ form fits their function.“It’s gorgeous,” Corman said. “The classrooms are all two-story buildings to save space. One thing that’s cool is we have retention basins required by law, (constructed by) reusing the double peak rocks from the site. The classrooms are going to be amazing, using newest technology for computer labs.”
