SDG&E Update – 3 Days Left – Thursday Morning Call-in

This Thursday, September 24 beginning at 10:00 a.m. the CPUC Commissioners will again hold their public comment period before casting their vote on SDG&E’s proposed project.  Our goal is to get 100 people to call in sometime during the morning to make them aware of how much we want them to consider other options by conducting an EIR before approving this project OR immediately approve placing these lines underground.  Help us reach that goal, mark it on your calendar and make sure to tell at least one neighbor and share with your social network.   The call-in number is:

(If you called in previously, you cannot speak again.  However, others from your household can speak and you can also help by finding a neighbor who will call in.)

We encourage everyone to call and voice their concerns and share any personal stories, but we are also looking for people who are available from 9:30 until 10:30 to 11 ish, to help us in presenting to the Commissioners an ‘organized’ presentation.  If you are available and interested in this chance to help, please email Robert Pack at packrobert@gmail.com for more information.

 

You can call in anytime starting at 9:50 all the way until the public comment period ends.  If you are busy around 10:00 a.m., try calling in whenever you are free, hopefully the call in period will last until at least 1 or 2 p.m. (or beyond).  The public comment period ends when there are no more callers waiting to speak in the queue, so the longer the comment period stays open the better.

 

Let’s not miss what will probably be our last opportunity to make our voices heard.

SDG&E Power Line Committee Update

Dear Neighbors,

The judge overseeing SDG&E’s request to build new power lines through our community has issued his recommendation in favor of SDG&E.  We are now one step away from construction beginning.   The last step in this process requires the five CPUC Commissioners to vote on the judge’s recommendation.

We have until August 25 to provide our last round of comments on SDG&E’s request.

This time our input goes directly to the Commissioners and can be more personal.

We hope each of you will submit a comment.  You can enter your comment directly on the website or attach a pdf.  You may resubmit all or part of your comments from last year but if you do please address it directly to the CPUC Commissioners and change the date.  If you did not send a comment previously, this is your last opportunity.  Here is the link to submit comments:

Once there, click the “Public Comments’ tab along the top and you will be at the Public Comment page.

Rather than forcing the Commissioners into a simple up or down vote to either approve or deny this project we believe requesting an EIR is still the best option.  Also mention personal stories regarding wildfires including canceled or higher fire insurance, impact on property value and aesthetics, or any other power line related concern.

City Council Tomorrow Night (Tuesday 5.14.19 at 6:00 p.m.)

Let’s close out this phase of our efforts with a bang. Hope to see you tomorrow night. When you arrive make sure to pick up your special sticker on the way into the Council chambers.
The meeting starts at 6:00, but if you cannot make it exactly at 6:00 don’t worry, they start with proclamations and presentations and then other agenda items, including some public comment before getting to our issue.

If you are not comfortable speaking, you can submit your comments at the meeting in the form of a letter. If you do speak and read your remarks make sure to submit them so they will be included in the City’s response to the CPUC. Depending on the number of speakers, we will get from 3-5 minutes each.

Wooden Poles – We are still looking for any and all pictures with the old wooden poles and power lines (pre-2010). Take this opportunity to stroll down memory lane, and look for pictures that might have them in the background. Three people have done just that and come up with pictures of their now college-aged kids out playing in the cul-de-sac or out on the hiking trails. Make this a fun challenge.

The CPUC is coming to Town in 4 Days – Are you Prepared?

Tuesday is 4 days away! At this point, please don’t say – what’s happening Tuesday?! Hopefully you are up to speed and spreading the word on the new transmission lines.

TUESDAY, APRIL 30
Attend one or both meetings – make that commitment HERE:

Goal: Standing room only at both meetings with enough speakers to fill the entire two hour hearing. You, your neighbor, your friends – we need headcount! The more speakers, the greater our impact will be on the CPUC. The CPUC has come from San Francisco to hear our concerns. Let them hear yours because the last official document SDG&E provided to the CPUC stated:

“To date, SDG&E has not identified any areas of controversy regarding the Proposed Project and has not identified any major issues that remain unresolved prior to construction of the Proposed Project.”

We need to show and tell the CPUC we do have “Areas of Controversy” and “Major Issues remain Unresolved”. Don’t let this project happen without voicing your concern. This is the time to act and your actions will make a difference.

Your Homework: Have you personalized your story? Attached are Talking Points. Make sure to ask the CPUC to complete an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) so our concerns and possible alternative routes can be seriously considered including a more in-depth fire risk analysis. Share your story – your narrative about how living in a high fire hazard severity zone affects you and your family. Speak out for our community next week. Plead with the CPUC not to increase our fire risk, to negatively impact the aesthetic nature of our community, to protect our property values, etc. Most importantly, make your voice heard.

Your Community Needs You to Speak Up about Powerlines

Hopefully, you’ve all taken a moment to review the email we sent out early this week and the embedded links about the large electrical transmission lines that have been slated to be constructed throughout our community.

Hopefully, you’ve all scheduled your sitters, blocked your calendars, and are making carpool arrangements with your neighbors.

Hopefully, you’ve signed up on the Google Form to commit to showing up for your community on April 30th.

While we wait for the 30th to approach, we need you to make your comment personal. Review the attached talking points and develop your comments, your story, and find your voice.  Once you have your comments prepared consider sharing them on the 30th. You don’t have to speak at the hearings, headcount is most important, but reading your comments/story aloud at the meeting will help us in our show of force and makes the biggest impact.  A judge who will preside over the final decision will be in attendance, so your voices will be heard, and what you say matters.

The time for action is now!  New SDG&E power lines and large steel poles are coming soon through our neighborhoods unless we attend these two April 30th meetings in force!  This is our biggest and nearly final opportunity to communicate our concerns to the CPUC before these power lines and poles are built.  Our goal is to stop SDG&E from building a second set of power lines through our communities and urge them to place these power lines underground.

Background:
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), after 17 months of considering SDG&E’s request to build a new set of 69 kV high voltage transmission lines and large steel poles through our communities, has sent a Notice of Intent to approve the project to the Governor’s Office.  We have 30 days, until May 15 at 5 p.m. to make our voices heard. There are viable alternatives to SDG&E’s proposed 12-mile circuitous route including a direct 5.4-mile underground route which would have no long-term environmental impact, unlike their current proposal.

In summary, the tentatively approved 12 miles above ground circuitous power line route will:
-Increase potential wildfire concerns
-Create unnecessary health risks for our children due to increased EMFs along the 12-mile route
-Decrease our property values (some more than others but we will ALL be impacted)
-Negatively impact habitat for some of our local sensitive species
-Negatively impact the aesthetic nature of our homes and community
-Potentially impact cultural resources buried along the route

The 5.4-mile alternative underground route:
-Has none of the above long-term negative impacts on our communities
-Has unknown financial consequences due to lack of in-depth budget analysis
